Small rant after the jump.

Seriously.

In the morning shift a debate about gentrification and racism came up (horray). During that someone brought up the reverse racism don’t real thing.

That means one of two things, this person thinks that either, that it’s totally cool to negatively segment a certain race due to a small parts actions, which sounds like racism and makes you an asshole. Or they subscribe to the idea that you must have an inflated place in society to be racist, which means that those who don’t are just prejudice, which is a lot like debating the merits of skim milk vs 2% milk that both come from an asshole of a cow.

I don’t get what the big uproar over gentrification is anyways. People with $$$ move into town and invest it into real estate and whatnot, thus driving housing prices up. They’re improving the area!

Gentrification is AWESOME if you’re a property owner! All you have to do is nothing, and other people coming in and spending their $$$ will make what you have worth more. If you rent, well, then that becomes an issue when your rent goes up. You have the option to work harder and make more $$$, spend less $$$, or move somewhere else that you can afford.

The debate comes in when Property taxes increase and people don’t have a way to pay them, or as you said rent. And they have nowhere to go.

I get where people are coming from, but it gets flawed when the same people then complain that richer neighborhoods get better services. Which makes sense, put more in get more out.

Descrimination definitely makes a lot of people poorer - but with this particular issue it is sort of mind boggling when people talk about it as though white people can’t possibly be poor or suffer from such economic processes. If one thinks Americans get uncomfortable discussing race - watch what happens when class gets brought up. Sudden amnesia. Denial. Delusions. Mass catatonia. Sudden cheerful willingness to talk about race, gender, religions, foreign policy, climate change instead.
